Certificate of Higher Education in
Hypnotherapy at Sheffield Hallam University
Hypnotherapy is widely recognised as a powerful and effective technique. It
encourages personal growth, can help to enhance confidence and self-esteem,
achieve deeper relaxation, gain clarity and focus, increase effectiveness and
improve general health and wellbeing. The use of hypnosis in areas such as health,
stress management and performance is widely recognised and well documented.
The introduction of a Certificate in Hypnotherapy, within the Counselling Skills
Programme, offers a new and exciting opportunity to develop an understanding
and practical application of the benefits of hypnotherapeutic interventions.
The aim of the course is to provide a sound introduction to self hypnosis and
the opportunity to focus in more depth into both the theory and practice of
hypnotherapy.
The course will be run by an experienced lecturer in the Division of Education
and Humanities. Kathy Stephenson. She is also a fully qualified advanced
cognitive Hypnotherapist who runs a highly successful private hypnotherapy practice.
Students will benefit from being introduced to the latest cutting edge techniques
in the field of hypnotherapy.
The course offers the opportunity to receive training of a high professional
standard and the opportunity to develop sound knowledge of the theoretical concepts
and practical skills and abilities to apply hypnotherapy in a therapeutic setting.

Hypnotherapy Research Update
Within the field of hypnotherapy, there is a large and wide ranging number of
studies into the effectiveness of hypnotherapeutic intervention with scientific
evidence based on credible data. Here is a small section of recent findings.
• Mind control of the menopause
The objective of this clinical trail was to assess the effect of hypnosis on
hot flushes and overall quality of life. 14 women with symptoms of hot flushes
were treated with four weekly sessions of hypnotherapy, with the same therapist
conducting all the sessions. The results showed that the frequency, duration
and severity of the hot flushes were all significantly reduced and the patients
slept better and felt less fatigued. The trail concluded that hypnosis appears
to be a most promising intervention for dealing with hot flushes, with potential
for improving insomnia and general quality of life.

• Report on the long-term benefits of hypnotherapy
for irritable bowel Syndrome.
There is good evidence that hypnotherapy is useful in short-term treatment of
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This study explored the longer term benefits.
204 patients completed questionnaires coring symptoms, quality of life, anxiety,
and depression before, immediately after, and up to six years following hypnotherapy.
All subjects also subjectively assessed the effects of hypnotherapy retrospectively
in order to define their 'responder status'. 71% of patients initially responded
to hypnotherapy. Of these, 81% maintained the improvement over time. Quality
of life and anxiety and depression scores were still significantly reduced at
follow-up but did show some deterioration compared to post-hypnotherapy scores.
Patients also reported a reduction in medication use following the completion
of hypnotherapy. This study shows that the beneficial effects of hypnotherapy
for IBS last for at least 5 years, and hypnotherapy is thus a viable treatment
option for IBS.

bowel syndrome. Gut 52 (11): 1623-1629, Nov 2003.
• Smoking Cessation
The study entitled Clinical hypnosis for smoking cessation was conducted using
three separate hypnotherapy sessions with 30 smokers and at the end of the trail
81% of the patients reported abstention at the end of the treatment. 85 remained
non smokers at 12 months post treatment.

Hypnosis 52 (1) 73-78.
• Hypnosis and
Childbirth
Research has shown that pregnant women using self hypnosis techniques are likely
to have shorter labour and reduced pain medication, Jenkins and Pritchard found
a reduction of 3 hours for prim gravid women (from 9.3 hours to 6.4 hours) and
1 hour for multi gravid women (from 6.2 hours to 5.3 hours) for active labour
(262 subjects and 600 controls). Pushing was statistically shorter for first
time mothers (from 50 min to 37 min).

Practical applications and theoretical considerations in normal labour. British
Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 100(3), 221-226, 1993.
• Surgery without anaesthetic
The phenomenal potential of hypnotherapy is powerfully illustrated in a New
Scientist article on the use of hypnotherapy in place of anaesthetic in surgery.
Daniel Elkan reports on the case of a woman undergoing a breast cancer operation
at the Lister Hospital in London using hypnosis instead of anaesthetic. This
is not an isolated case and Elkan points to Liege hospital in Belgium which
has performed over 4800 operations using hypnosedation.
